Body
WHEREAS, Sonny Gibson is an independent researcher and historian concerned with chronicling the African American historical contributions in the greater Kansas City area; and,
WHEREAS, through his research, Mr. Gibson determined that much of the valuable history of "Negros" was unknown, hidden, and unrecorded, particularly the cultural and academic accomplishments of African Americans in Kansas City, Missouri; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Gibson retired in 1989 as Branch Chief of Fair Housing with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Gibson has 29 years of experience in conflict resolution and human relations and was honored in 2009 with the NAACP 100 Year Anniversary Carl R. Johnson Humanitarian Award; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Gibson holds a bachelor of art in social work from Park University, Parkville, Missouri; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Gibson serves as president of the Social Reality of Black Insanity Consortium and the Kansas City Black United Fund, Vice President of the KCMO Black Historical and Genealogy Society, and serves on the board of directors for Martin Luther King Village and the National Black United Fund; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes Sonny Gibson for his contribution to Kansas City history on the occasion of publication of his book, "1965 Kansas City Early Negro History."

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
