Body
WHEREAS, the month of February has traditionally been set aside as African American History month, with various events and activities taking place throughout the community; and,
WHEREAS, Elvis "Sonny" Gibson has authored and published a new book titled Mecca of the New Negro; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Gibson illustrates in his book the prologue of the Negro before 1940, and thereafter, the established cultural, political, and social institutions, and the three-dimensional entertainment; and,
WHEREAS, in celebration of African American History Month, the historical accomplishments of people of color in Kansas City are documented by the book in expanded years; and,
WHEREAS, the Mecca of the New Negro is a pictorial retrospective glimpse of the past, including demographic trends shaping the Negro community, establishment of the Negro church (1828-1928), Negro businesses, history of the 18th and Vine district, William T. Vernon, Registrar of the U.S. Treasury under President Theodore Roosevelt, and Marcus Garvey in Kansas City in 1922; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Jackson County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby commending Elvis "Sonny" Gibson for authoring and publishing his book, Mecca of the New Negro...Attorney
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
