Body
WHEREAS, after a courageous battle with cancer, Richard "Dick" Schmidt, a dedicated
servant of the people, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2007, at age 73; and,

WHEREAS, Dick ably represented the area encompassing most of Independence in the Jackson County Legislature from 1981 until 1985 and then served as the Democratic Director for the Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners; and,

WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Schmidt was born January 30, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Bertha and Charles Schmidt; and,

WHEREAS, Dick attended Rockhurst College and received his law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City which lead him to a successful career in private practice in Jackson County; and,

WHEREAS, Dick served for many years as the attorney for the Fire Protection Districts for Fort Osage, Lone Jack, and Lake Lotawana, and as the national attorney for the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity as well as a member of the Board of Directors of St. Mary's Hospital in Blue Springs, Missouri; and,

WHEREAS, as a lifelong Boy Scout, Dick received many honors from the Heart of America Council, including Eagle Scout, Chieftain of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, Scoutmaster, District Chairman of the Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Diocese of Kansas City, the St. George Emblem from National Catholic Committee on Scouting, the Bronze Pelican, and the District Award of Merit of the Silver Beaver which is Scouting's highest award; and,

WHEREAS, Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Norma Faye Schmidt in 2004; and,

WHEREAS, Dick was survived by his fiancee, Carole Plattner, his three sons...
