WHEREAS, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art opened its doors on December 11, 1933, as the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art and Atkins Museum of Fine Arts, to nearly 8,000 visitors, and is recognized internationally as one of the finest general art museums in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, the museum currently maintains collections of more than 33,500 works of art, including exhibits exploring different cultures from Africa to Southeast Asia, to American photographers or Japanese ceramics; and,
WHEREAS, the new expansion, the Bloch Building, has added significant appeal and attraction to the Museum; and,
WHEREAS, to commemorate the 75th anniversary, the Museum is hosting a year-long celebration that includes special events, programs and exhibitions; and,
WHEREAS, the grand capstone exhibition entitled Magnificent Gifts for the 75th, will be held in the Bloch Building galleries, reflecting the creative vigor of nearly every continent and featuring 130 of the 400 generous gifts and promised gifts made in honor of the Museum's anniversary; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary.
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
