Body
WHEREAS, Alice Kitchen is the director of Social Work and Community Services department at Children's Mercy Hospital, having developed her small staff into a comprehensive force for family-centered care; and,

WHEREAS, Alice was the force behind the creation of the Medicaid Application Unit, developed to increase healthcare coverage for children, and was the key support behind the Missouri Child Health Insurance Plan legislation in 1998; and,

WHEREAS, Alice has long championed child welfare causes, building multiple coalitions in the community to secure support for the creation of The Child Protection Center, a child advocacy facility for children who have been abused or neglected; and,

WHEREAS, Alice has been a cutting-edge leader in the identification and intervention for pregnant and postpartum women and their children affected by substance abuse, facilitating the Kansas City Task Force on Families Affected by Substance Abuse since 1989; and,
WHEREAS, Alice was instrumental in bringing federal funding to the Team for Infants Endangered by Substance Abuse (TIES) program, and was an original supporter of the COMBAT initiative; and,

WHEREAS, Alice was a founding member of the statewide Perinatal Task Force on Substance Abuse and a facilitator of interagency agreements between local, county, and federal judiciary and law enforcement to defer prosecution of pregnant substance abusers willing to seek treatment; and,

WHEREAS, Alice received the Ida M. Cannon Award from the National Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care for her extensive work establishing hospital satellite clinics at Operation Breakthrough and in ar...
