Body
WHEREAS, Niles Home for Children traces its roots serving Kansas City children and families back to 1883 when African-American bricklayer Samuel Eason opened his small home at 14th and Vine to provide food and shelter for local homeless or orphaned children; and,

WHEREAS, the agency became the Niles Home for Children in 1924 when philanthropists Fran and Emma Niles donated land and financed construction of a three-story mansion capable of providing a home to more than 100 children; and,

WHEREAS, Niles Home for Children has continued to serve abused, neglected, and abandoned children from its inner-city location at 1911 E. 23rd Street; and,

WHEREAS, each year, Niles Home for Children serves about 150 children, ages 6 to 17, providing those children with services that include residential treatment, day treatment/alternative education, and adolescent substance abuse and treatment; and,

WHEREAS, 2008 marks the 125th Anniversary of Niles Home for Children fulfilling its mission to the mental health and educational needs of high-risk children and their families, empowering them to become confident contributing citizens; and,

WHEREAS, Niles Home for Children has planned a week-long celebration of its 125th Anniversary, including an alumni reunion for the former clients, residents, employees, social workers, volunteers, and many others who have been a part of Niles; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes and honors the 125 years of service Niles Home for Children has provided in the Kansas C...
