RESOLUTION #10917, July 31, 1995

INTRODUCED BY James D. Tindall and Lisa White Hardwick, County Legislators

Body
WHEREAS, COMBAT is leading a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, community-based approach to fighting illicit drugs throughout Jackson County; and,

WHEREAS, some eighty-four agencies throughout the County receive financial support from COMBAT and form a significant component of the effective network of law enforcement, treatment, prevention, community policing, neighborhood prosecution, drug court, corrections, and family court; and,

WHEREAS, the legislatively appointed Special Advisory Committee in 1993 recommended that informing the taxpayer about the services and progress of each of these programs was imperative; and,

WHEREAS, since the beginning of COMBAT, over 1260 drug houses have been put out of business; more than 700 persons are in treatment for substance abuse each month; hundreds of drug dealers have been sent to prison, 390 in 1994 alone; and violent and drug-related crime is down 15% over the last two years; and,

WHEREAS, over 100 special events will be held throughout the County to inform the citizens of substance abuse services offered through COMBAT and the availability and progress of COMBAT programs; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature does hereby join County Executive Katheryn Sheilds in recognizing the importance of awareness and education in fighting illicit drugs and hereby proclaims August of 1995 as Drug Awareness Month in Jackson County.
