WHEREAS, in August 2001, Sergeant Marty Cavanah was selected the Independence Police Department's "Officer of the Month" for the untold hours he spent investigating an unsolved murder which occurred at an Independence motel in 1974; and,
WHEREAS, Sergeant Cavanah, who was assigned this "cold case review" in 2000, was able to draw upon his many years of investigative experience, contacts and remarkable ingenuity to gain a full confession from the suspect in the 27-year-old murder case; and,
WHEREAS, he also received ongoing assistance with this case from various law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Missouri Highway Patrol, Cole County Sheriff's Department, and detectives of the Independence Police Department; and,
WHEREAS, the murder victim's daughter, now in her 50's, expressed her appreciation in a letter to Acting Chief of Police, John M. Main, attributing the success of the case to Sergeant Cavanah's outstanding dedication and perseverance; and,
WHEREAS, Sergeant Cavanah also received a letter of commendation from Acting Chief Main, dated August 27, 2001, acknowledging his dedication to the case and commending his extraordinary efforts in resolving this terrible tragedy; and,
WHEREAS, Sergeant Cavanah, who has served the citizens of Jackson County as a member of the Independence Police Department since June 2, 1975, has worked in the patrol, traffic and investigations unit, and currently is assigned in the crime scene unit; and,
