Body
WHEREAS, Isaac Newton Farris, Jr., the nephew of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was named president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; and,

WHEREAS, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was founded by Dr. King in 1957 as a civil rights organization dedicated to nonviolent protests against racism, poverty, and war; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Farris was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and attended his uncle's alma mater, Morehouse College, majoring in political science; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Farris comes to this position after years of working on political and social justice issues; and,

WHEREAS, in 1984, Mr. Farris was the Georgia field coordinator for the Walter Mondale presidential campaign and he later served as the deputy campaign manager for the re-election of Andrew Young as Mayor of Atlanta; and,

WHEREAS, in 1986, Mr. Farris was the campaign manager for Martin Luther King III's successful bid for election as a Fulton County Georgia Commissioner; and,

WHEREAS, from 1992 to 1996, Mr. Farris served as the president and chief executive officer of Clean Air Industries, Inc., an environmental services company; and,

WHEREAS, in 1996 Mr. Farris was appointed chief operating officer of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center and in 2005 he was appointed president and chief executive officer of the King Center; and,

WHEREAS, in his public role, Mr. Farris has frequently participated in programs and commentaries in the national media on topics related to equal rights and justice; now therefore;
