RESOLUTION # 16390, August 27, 2007

INTRODUCED BY Bob Spence, County Legislator

Body
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Community College-Longview Lakers baseball team, coached by first year head coach Clint Culbertson, finished its winning season as the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division-II World Series Champions, Central District Champions and Region 16 Champions; and,

WHEREAS, Coach Culbertson, named Region 16, Central District, and National Coach of the Year, along with Assistant Coaches Ramon Grado and Zach Norman, led the Lakers to an overall record of 41 wins and 18 losses; and,

WHEREAS, the Lakers encouraged community support with their slogan "Catch the Blue Wave"; and,

WHEREAS, the Lakers athletes excelled as top performers in the following:
Academic All-Americans
Danny McCorkell and Kory Coe

All-16 Region Team
Drew Gray, Chris Matlock, Austin Graham, Brett Newton, and Danny McCorkell

World Series Tournament Team
Sam Rathbun, Eric Bond, Danny McCorkell, and Chris Matlock; and,
WHEREAS, Drew Gray is commended for his selection as the Region 16 Player of the Year, Central District Player of the Year, and NJCAA D-II 1st Team All-American; and,

WHEREAS, Chris Matlock, who picked up his twelfth save of the season in the tournament, earned the pinnacle of a player's achievement as the World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP); and,

WHEREAS, the following Lakers team members demonstrated hard work, dedication, and talent at every practice and game:
