Body
WHEREAS, Karen Haren received the 2009 Executive Director of the Year award from Feeding America, the nation's food bank network, for her work with Harvesters; and,
WHEREAS, this award honors the leader of a member food bank who has contributed an extraordinary effort to the network's viability and momentum; and,
WHEREAS, over the past twelve years, Karen has successfully positioned Harvesters, the Kansas City area's only food bank, as the leading hunger-relief organization in Greater Kansas City; and,
WHEREAS, Karen's expertise in nonprofit management and food banking, as well as her passion to feed the hungry, has paved the way for Harvesters to strategically address current food banking challenges and opportunities; and,
WHEREAS, Karen began her work with Harvesters in 1986 as a volunteer board member, where she served for eleven years, including three years as president; and,
WHEREAS, in 1997, Karen left the board to join Harvesters' staff, working as the Director of Administration; and,
WHEREAS, in 1999, Karen was named Harvesters' Executive Director, and in 2007 was named President and CEO; and,
WHEREAS, Harvesters - The Community Food Network distributed 28 million pounds of food last year to more than 550 non-profit organizations in 13 counties in and around Kansas City, and approximately 60,000 people receive food assistance from Harvesters weekly; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes and honors Karen Haren on her receipt of the 2009 Executive Director of the Year Award from Feeding America.
