Body
WHEREAS, the University of Missouri Extension's Alianzas program ("Alianzas") has received the 2005 National Diversity Champion Award from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Extension Diversity Task Force; and,
WHEREAS, between 1990 and 2000, the Latino population in Missouri grew from nearly 62,000 to 118,000 for a 92 percent increase, and 30 percent of Missouri's Hispanic population resides in Jackson County, Missouri, working in service, industrial, and agricultural positions; and,
WHEREAS, the Alianzas program was established by the University of Missouri Extension in 2001 to focus its efforts and those of its partners to establish initiatives in meeting challenges facing the immigrant Latino population and their resident communities; and,
WHEREAS, Alianzas has facilitated the implementation of the Bi-National Health Week in Missouri in order to increase Latino awareness of their health needs and available health services as well as increasing the competency of Missouri health service organizations in dealing with the needs of the growing Latino population and the emergence of a bi-national culture; and,
WHEREAS, Alianzas has also served to help all Missourians in dealing with the effects of globalization of the economy and cultures and increased educational opportunities for Latinos; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates the University of Missouri Extension's Alianzas program upon its receipt of the 2005 National Diversity Champion Award.
