WHEREAS, the month of May has been designated as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with the theme for 2024 of Advancing Leaders Through Innovation; and,
WHEREAS, this year's theme pays homage to the visionaries and trailblazers who have shaped the Asian Pacific American Heritage history and continues to influence our collective future; and,
WHEREAS, the month of May was chosen as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, given that the majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants; and,
WHEREAS, the 2020 United States Census reported approximately 19.9 million people who identify as Asian; and,
WHEREAS, celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month provides the people of our community an opportunity to recognize the achievements, contributions, and history of, and to understand the challenges faced by, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature recognizes the significance of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month as an important time to celebrate the significant contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to the history of the United States; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature does hereby proclaim May 2024 as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and encourages all residents to recognize that Asian American and Pacific Islander communities enhance the rich diversity of and strength...
