Body
WHEREAS, Second Baptist Church of Kansas City, Missouri was originally organized as a "Stragglers Camp" located on the south bank of the Missouri River, making it the oldest African American Baptist Church in the Kansas City area; and,

WHEREAS, in October 1863, the Rev. Clark Moore held an organizational meeting of church attendees, thus officially founding Second Baptist Church and Allen Chapel A.M.E; and,

WHEREAS, the congregation erected its first superstructure in the late 1890's, which stood until destroyed by a fire in May 1926; and,

WHEREAS, through this period, Second Baptist Church was led by the Rev. Samuel W. Bacote, who presided over the congregation for fifty-one years until his death in 1946; and,

WHEREAS, on February 17, 1963, Second Baptist moved to its present location at 3620 E. 39th Street, Kansas City, Missouri; and,

WHEREAS, on August 1, 2008, the Rev. Dr. Vernon Percy Howard, Jr., became the eighth pastor of Second Baptist Church, leading the congregation to a renewal and rebirth of the esteemed church; and,

WHEREAS, in recent years the church has seen overwhelming growth in membership and has expanded its properties and ministry offerings as it moves toward its future vision; now therefore,


BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Second Baptist Church, on the occasion of its 150th anniversary and extends sincere best wishes for continued success in the future.

Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
