INTRODUCED BY Fred Arbanas, Henry C. Rizzo, Dan Tarwater, Theresa Garza Ruiz, Scott Burnett, James D. Tindall, Dennis Waits, Greg Grounds, and Bob Spence, County Legislators

Body
WHEREAS, Herb Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer of the Missouri AFL-CIO has been selected as Labor's Representative of the Year for 2010; and,

WHEREAS, Herb first became a union member while still in high school in 1961, when he joined the Brotherhood of Locomotive Trainmen, later becoming a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local 1650, when he joined TWA in 1964; and,

WHEREAS, Herb developed strong union principles and in 1972 was elected as a member of the union's Safety & Health Committee, serving as chairman from 1975 until 1987, and going on to serve as Chairman of the National Safety Council's Labor Division, Labor Liaison to the Air Transport Committee of the Industrial Division, Labor Liaison to the Occupational Health Advisory Committee, and a member of the National Safety Council's Board of Directors; and,

WHEREAS, Herb successfully ran for president of Local 1650 in 1987, during the turbulent times of the airline takeovers, becoming actively involved in many Kansas City civic organizations, including the Heart of America Central Labor Council, Citizens Budget Review Commission, United Labor Right to Truth Committee, Heart of America United Way, Labor/Management Council of Greater Kansas City, and the Institute of Labor Studies; and,

WHEREAS, Herb began serving as a full-time union organizer for his international union in 1993, and his extensive background in occupational safety and health led him to present cases before OSHA and to testify as an expert witness in product liability cases; and,
