Body
WHEREAS, driven by their deep commitment to community improvement, the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council and community volunteers partnered with Keep Kansas City Beautiful (KKCB), the Center for Economic Information at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC), and the Kansas City Neighborhood Alliance (KCNA) to develop a nationally recognized model for sustainable community change; and,

WHEREAS, each year Keep Kansas City Beautiful coordinates community volunteers to assess the amount of visible litter in Kansas City by conducting a Litter Index, a litter measurement and evaluation tool researched and designed by Keep America Beautiful; and,

WHEREAS, for the past two years, the County, through the joint efforts of the County Executive Katheryn J. Shields and the Legislature, has recognized the efforts of Keep Kansas City Beautiful by partially funding its programs; and,

WHEREAS, in 2003 Keep Kansas City Beautiful received funding from Deffenbaugh Industries, Inc., to work with the Center for Economic Information at UMKC in computerizing the Litter Index using the technology of Geographic Information Systems mapping; and,

WHEREAS, the more sophisticated Litter Index tool is used by neighborhoods, governments and organizations to guide litter prevention, education and cleanup efforts and to overlay the results with information on other social issues through the Neighborhood Housing Inventory, a joint project of KCNA, UMKC and the City of Kansas City, Missouri; and.
