Body
WHEREAS, the Food Day Kansas City event is an effort to challenge the members of our community to eat real food, which is local, healthy, and sustainable; and,
WHEREAS, on the first Food Day held in 2011, 2,300 events took place in all 50 states, representing the largest grassroots mobilization for improved food policies in recent history; and,
WHEREAS, this year's event, to be held October 24, 2012, educates and inspires the citizens of Jackson County to create a stronger, healthier, more accessible, and more sustainable local food system; and,
WHEREAS, adopting these principles will reduce obesity and diet-related diseases by promoting safe and healthy diets and is a critical factor in improving Jackson County citizens' overall health; and,
WHEREAS, supporting sustainable family farms and local agriculture benefits the local economy; and,
WHEREAS, obtaining fair pay and safe conditions for food and farm workers is beneficial for both the producer and consumer so that the food we produce and consume is safe and fair for all; and,
WHEREAS, the health and well-being of our citizens is a primary concern for the citizens of Jackson County; and,
WHEREAS, protecting the health of the environment and farm animals is necessary to sustain future generations; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby proclaims October 24, 2012, as Food Day Kansas City and urges all citizens of Jackson County to participate in the Food Day activities, including eating real food.
