Body
WHEREAS, the W.E.B DuBois Learning Center will celebrate its thirty-fifth anniversary of service to the children of Kansas City on Saturday, October 11, 2008; and,
WHEREAS, the center was founded in 1973 by William "Bill" Grace and Leon Dixon, Jr., as a community effort to supplement education for area children; and,
WHEREAS, the programs of the center have traditionally targeted students in the Kansas City Missouri School District, but the center also attracts and assists students from public, charter and private schools throughout the greater Kansas City area; and,
WHEREAS, the center is "staffed" by more than seventy-five active volunteers who donate their time each week by tutoring, and by performing a variety of roles in the operation of the center, such as administration, attendance, testing, and technology services; and,
WHEREAS, the celebration of the anniversary is a special recognition of the efforts of the many volunteers who have assisted over the years, making it possible for the center to provide assistance to an estimated 10,000 Kansas City children; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes and honors the thirty-five years of service W.E.B. DuBois Learning Center has provided in the Kansas City community, and recognizes the many volunteers who have made this possible.
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
