HEREAS, every year the month of March is designated as Women's History Month by Presidential Proclamation, to honor women's contributions in American history and recognize trailblazing women who are doing work that lifts their communities; and,
WHEREAS, recognition is in order for a woman of her undoubted leadership in promoting political awareness in the Latino community and that is the late Lali Garcia; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Garcia became a part of our history as she organized the Westside Citizens Democratic Club which became a launching pad for Latino elected officials; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Garcia helped Pat Rios and Paul Rojas to become the first Latino elected officials at the County and State levels; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Garcia went on to found the La Raza political club and became a true political force, she met Presidents and helped the campaign process of senators and other members of congress; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Garcia worked to expand programs for senior citizens and childhood education at the Guadalupe Center, as a board member she was tireless in her efforts to raise funds, connect families and expand opportunities; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Garcia was called many titles such as icon, organizer, activist, trailblazer, Queen Bee, friend and mentor, but family was at the center of her life and she will forever be remembered as Grandma Lali; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED that the Jackson County Legislature hereby honors the late Lali Garcia for her work in the Latino community and being a pioneer in the Latino political world.
