Body
WHEREAS, Roberta "Poo" Coker will retire her position with the Independence Board of Education in July 2001; and,

WHEREAS, she came to the district twenty-three years ago, working as a part-time media and public-relations director after her two children entered high school; and,

WHEREAS, now both of her children are grown, and she has one granddaughter with whom she would like to spend more time; and,

WHEREAS, during her tenure with the Independence School District, she turned a public relations job into one of community relations, acting as a the liaison between the school district and the community; and,

WHEREAS, she coordinated 12 elections for levies or bond issues and administered numerous new scholarships; and,

WHEREAS, Roberta served three superintendents and helped the district work toward accreditation with distinction in 1999; and,

WHEREAS, most recently, she worked for the 2001 tax levy increase, which will raise starting teacher salaries approximately $2,000.00; and,

WHEREAS, she has served the Independence community as chairwoman of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Junior Service League, and president of the Rotary Club; and,

WHEREAS, in 1996 she was named the Truman Heartland Community Foundation's first Independence Citizen of the Year; and,

WHEREAS, "There is a huge amount of respect in the business community for her honesty and her integrity, and that in turn reflects on the school district," said Rick Hemmingsen, president of the Independence Chamber of Commerce; and,

WHEREAS, Roberta has displayed professionalism and exemplary service during her tenure with the Independen...
