Body
WHEREAS, Sherwin Carroll is retiring as the Kansas City Director and Recording Secretary of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 1; and,

WHEREAS, Sherwin is a 37-year member of SEIU and has been on the SEIU staff for 29 years; and,

WHEREAS, Sherwin began working for Lee Company in 1972, prior to coming to work for SEIU, Local 96 in 1985 as an Organizer/Union Representative; and,

WHEREAS, in 1991, Sherwin was elected Executive Director of SEIU, Local 96, becoming the first African American to head the local union; and,

WHEREAS, Sherwin has served on the boards of the Greater Kansas City AFL-CIO, Missouri State AFL-CIO, United, Way, Missouri Pro-Vote, Jobs with Justice, U.S. Action, Salvation Army, and International Auditors Board of Trustees; and,

WHEREAS, in 2006, Sherwin served as Treasurer and spokesman for the Missouri campaign to raise the minimum wage; and,

WHEREAS, Sherwin is proud of his family's long history of union membership and had the honor of meeting with Barack Obama in preparation for his first presidential campaign; and,

WHEREAS, Sherwin has been married to his wife, Dee, for 38 years and they look forward to spending more time with their sons, Sherwin, Jr., and Andre, daughter, Cherie, and their ten grandchildren; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Sherwin Carroll on his retirement and extends best wishes to him in the future.
