A RESOLUTION celebrating, honoring, and remembering the life and legacy of Diego Segui.

RESOLUTION NO. 21998, August 18, 2025

Body
WHEREAS, Diego Segui was born in Holguin, Cuba and would eventually immigrate to the United States; and,

WHEREAS Mr. Segui signed to play baseball with the Cincinnati Reds; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Segui would make his major league debut with the Kansas City Athletics, where he played from 1962-1965 and again in 1967; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Segui also played for the Washington Senators, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Pilots, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, and Seattle Mariners; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Segui's major league career would span 15 years, with a career ERA of 3.81, over 1,200 career strikeouts, over 600 games played, and he was the AL ERA Leader of the 1970 MLB season; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Segui would also pitch for the Venezuelan Winter League for 15 seasons, where he set the all-time strikeout record with 941 strikeouts; and,

WHEREAS, upon retiring from baseball, Mr. Segui would serve as a pitching coach for the Ponce Lions of Puerto Rico, Pocatello Giants of the Short Season Pioneer League, and the Everett Giants of the San Fransico Giants Organization; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Segui was inducted into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 and Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame in 2006; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Segui received the Negro League Jose M?ndez Beisbol Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Segui is survived by his three children, Diego Segui, David Segui, and Diana Segui; and,

WHEREAS, the Legislature and Jackson County would like to celebrate, honor, and remember the legacy of Diego Segui; now therefore,
