Body
WHEREAS, in February 2001, Mike Bolger and a group of friends were eating dinner when Luke Ayler began choking on a piece of food; and,
WHEREAS, Mike realized that his friend was in distress and so responded quickly using the Heimlich maneuver to assist Luke with dislodging the food in his throat; and,
WHEREAS, Mike said, "I went over to him to see if he was OK...he was coughing so that was a good sign, but I decide to try to help him. It didn't take long and then he was fine;" and,
WHEREAS, Mike, a junior at Blue Springs South High School who wants to be a firefighter after graduation, learned the maneuver earlier this year in a Fire Science class at the Fort Osage Career and Technology Center; and,
WHEREAS, Dennis King, Chief Instructor for the Fire Science Class, praised Mike for his successful effort saying, "True heroism is one of those things that comes from the heart and without thought of one's own safety and well being. Heroes should be recognized whenever possible;" and,
WHEREAS, Mike is the son of Ron and Lynn Bolger of Lee's Summit, and the brother of Chris; and,
WHEREAS, Mike was recently honored at Fort Osage for his successful effort in using the Heimlich maneuver; and,
WHEREAS, Mike said, "I think it would be good for everyone to know how to use the Heimlich maneuver. It is the first time I have used it, but it worked;" now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature recognizes and commends Mike Bolger for responding with true heroism in a crisis situation by using the "Heimlich Maneuver" to save a friend.
