Body
WHEREAS, because of the deep concern of a small group of 20 women, the first non- church related charity in the Kansas City area was started in 1870 for many young women, some with children, returning to Kansas City after the Civil War; and,
WHEREAS, these returning women, often without resources, needed assistance to get their lives back on track and this devoted group of 20 women saw a need and started a mission to assist these women and children; and,
WHEREAS, through the years, and under the management of The Women's Christian Association, the Gillis Center and Armour Home have evolved; and
WHEREAS, today, Gillis Center services 50 boys in residence and as many as two hundred families, while Armour Home, a continuing care community, serves one hundred residents in independent and assisted care living and a medical wing; and,
WHEREAS, through generous contributions from the Kansas City community, both homes have provided excellent care to their residents through the years; therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Gillis Center and Armour Home on their 125th Anniversary and wishes them many more years of success in providing care to their residents.
Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
