A RESOLUTION in honor of Women’s History Month recognition is due to the late Captain Carolyn Mitchell a trailblazer as the first Black female firefighter for the Kansas City Fire Department.

Body
WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell was one of the first female firefighters to receive training through the Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) Fire Academy in 1977; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell earned many promotions while working for the KCFD, her most notable achievement was being the first Black female captain in suppression for the KCFD; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell during her time with KCFD, advocated for women and led the charge in making KCFD a more conducive environment for women to thrive; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell’s aptitude and determination is to be honored as she set a path for women in a male dominated profession being firefighting; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED that the Jackson County Legislature hereby honors the late Captain Carolyn Mitchell for her trailblazing contributions to the firefighting profession.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
