A RESOLUTION expressing the support of the Legislature for the cooperative effort among the County, the City of Independence, and the Jackson County Historical Society to restore, preserve, and operate the historic Courthouse on the Square in Independence.

WHEREAS, if the voters of Jackson County authorize the Jackson County Safe Schools/Safe Community Tax at the election on April 4, 2000, the County will consolidate all county functions presently located in the vicinity of the Independence Square into a new Justice Center; and,
WHEREAS, such consolidation would free up space in the historic Courthouse on the Square; and,
WHEREAS, the County Executive and Chairman of the Legislature have been involved in discussions with the City of Independence and Jackson County Historical Society regarding plans for future uses of the courthouse; and,
WHEREAS, these parties are in general agreement that use of the courthouse for a visitor orientation center and office space for the historical society is appropriate for this facility in the long term; and,
WHEREAS, the preliminary agreement of the parties regarding the restoration, preservation, and operation of the Courthouse on the Square for these uses is set out in the attached letter from Rondell F. Stewart, Mayor of Independence; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature expresses its support for the joint effort to restore, preserve, and operate the historic Courthouse on the Square as a visitor orientation center and office space for the Jackson County Historical Society.
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
