A RESOLUTION expressing the sympathy of the Legislature to Sergeant John Bullard and the Independence Police K-9 unit, upon the occasion of the death of K-9 officer Hondo.

Body
WHEREAS, Independence K-9 officer Hondo recently passed away due to intense heat exposure, after a patrol car temperature monitoring and alert device failed to activate; and,
WHEREAS, the Independence police department acquired Hondo from Vohne Licke Kennels in Denver, Indiana; and,
WHEREAS, Hondo trained for 16 weeks at the Independence Police Canine Training Facility and was commissioned to serve as a patrol and narcotics dog in January 2003; and,
WHEREAS, during his short career, Hondo assisted in several felony captures and drug searches, including one seizure of 18 pounds of cocaine; and,
WHEREAS, "We spend more time with these dogs than with our families. They live with us 24 hours a day," said Officer Paul Thompson of the Independence Police K-9 unit; and,
WHEREAS, Hondo was a hard working and social animal who loved children; and,
WHEREAS, Hondo lived with his partner and companion, Sgt. John Bullard; and,
WHEREAS, Hondo will be greatly missed by Sergeant John Bullard and those who knew and loved him; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby extends its deepest sympathy to Sergeant John Bullard and the Independence Police K-9 unit, upon the occasion of the death of K-9 officer Hondo.
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
