A RESOLUTION congratulating Mike Macias on his retirement from the United States Navy after twenty-one years of notable service.

Body

WHEREAS, after twenty-one years of service, Mike Macias retired from the U.S. Navy and the Naval Reserve as a Mineman First Class; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mike was born at Fort Bliss near El Paso, Texas, on April 24, 1968, and grew up in the Argentine area of Kansas City, Kansas, and the Westside of Kansas City, Missouri; and,

 

WHEREAS, after graduating from high school, Mike enlisted in the United States Navy and shipped out to basic training on Friday the 13th of June, 1986, at the Orlando Naval Training Center in Florida; and,

 

WHEREAS, at age 22 Mike was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy, and later on the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt when the first Gulf War began, and he went to war; and, 

 

WHEREAS, during the war, Mike served as a shift supervisor on his test station, performing repairs on radio frequency equipment for  F-14 Tomcats; and,

 

WHEREAS, on March 3, 2003, Mike was recalled to active duty for Operation Enduring Freedom as an Avionics Technician, in which role he was in charge of the night shift at the air terminal in Sicily; and,

 

WHEREAS, in September 2003, Mike took the exam for Mineman and eventually reached the rank of Mineman First Class; and,

 

WHEREAS, during his service, Mike received thirteen medals and seven ribbons, including the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy Reserve Meritorious Service Medal with Bronze Star Device, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Navy Battle Readiness Excellence "E" Ribbon, and the Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mike's love for helping others build their skills and acquire knowledge led him to obtain his Bachelors of Science in Adult Education and Workforce Development; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mike has traveled to seventeen countries and, yet, has also been service-oriented in this community, volunteering for Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Rose Brooks Shelter for Domestic Violence Victims, YMCA, Pop Warner Football, and Habitat for Humanity; and,

WHEREAS, most recently Mike has served as Executive Director of the Kansas City Chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) National Educational Services Centers, Inc. (LNESC), the nation's oldest and largest direct-membership Hispanic advocacy organization; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Mike Macias on his retirement from the United States Navy Reserve and extends sincere gratitude for his contributions to the Jackson County community and to the United States of America.
