Body
WHEREAS, former Kansas City Councilman Charles A. Hazley passed away August 13, 2013, at the age of 71; and,
 
WHEREAS, Charles A. Hazley was the longest serving member of the Kansas City Council, representing the third district from 1971 until his retirement in 1991; and,
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Hazley's political career began in 1963 as he fought for change in the city as a charter member of Young Freedom, the youth affiliate of Freedom, Inc; and,
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Hazley's passion drove him to participate in boycotts and sit-ins in the 1960's and work toward integration and equality through voter registration drives and campaign rallies; and,
 
WHEREAS, during Mr. Hazley's career, he was instrumental in the development of the 18th and Vine District, Martin Luther King Village, the Pioneer Campus of Penn Valley Community College, and the 12th Street Corridor Public Works Improvements projects; and,
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Hazley was a co-convener in the Urban Summit, an annual event to empower participants toward a positive change; and,
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Hazley was the co-owner of the McDaniel/Hazley Group, an insurance brokerage firm in Kansas City; and,
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Hazley's friends and family will miss his influence and devotion to the betterment of Kansas City's urban core; now therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature recognizes the life and extraordinary personal and professional achievements of Charles A. Hazley, and extends its deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
