A RESOLUTION congratulating Head Coach Heather Knudsen and the Blue Springs High School girls varsity cross country team upon winning the 2001 Class 4A Missouri Cross Country Championship.

Body

WHEREAS, Head Coach Heather Knudsen and the Blue Springs High School "Wildcats" brought home the 2001 Class 4A Missouri Cross Country Championship, becoming the school's first girls team to secure a state cross country title; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Wildcats varsity girls cross country team had a very successful season, winning the Blue Springs, Grandview, and Clinton Invitationals, and the Big 8 Conference, District, Sectional, and Class 4A State championships ending the season with an overall record of 87-2; and,

 

WHEREAS, Wildcat team members include seniors: Nicole Graham, Becky Craig, Valeri VanDyke; sophomores: Stephanie Lavin, Janell McKinney, Amber Knebel, Kim Chumley, Meg Barker; and freshmen: Caroline Cooper, Shayna McClintoch; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Wildcats achieved their victory by scoring a total of 71 points and finishing with four runners in the top 25, with Lavin placing 3rd with a time of 19 minutes 36.39 seconds, Graham placing 4th in 19 minutes 41.46 seconds,  Knebel placing 13th in 20 minutes 34.71 seconds, and VanDyke placing 25th in 20 minutes 34.71 seconds; and, 

 

WHEREAS, "They were pretty determined to get first place this year, " said Coach Knudsen, "They went above and beyond expectation..they just ran with their hearts;" and,

 

WHEREAS, Coach Knudsen, who has been coaching at Blue Springs High School for 5 years, with 3 years of coaching cross country teams, graduated from Blue Springs High in 1991, earned her Science Education degree from the University of Missouri, and returned to Blue Springs High to teach 11th grade biology and serve as head coach for both the track and cross country teams; and,

 

WHEREAS, Coach Knudsen deserves the highest praise and recognition for leading this exceptional group of young women to their successful state championship; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Blue Springs High School's 2001 girls cross country team, the Wildcats, and Head Coach Heather Knudsen, upon winning the 2001 Class 4A Missouri Cross Country Championship.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
