RESOLUTION NO. 21425, October 9, 2023

 

INTRODUCED BY  Manuel Abarca IV, Jalen Anderson, Donna Peyton, Venessa Huskey, Charlie Franklin, and Jeanie Lauer, County Legislators

 

 

Body

 WHEREAS, Mexican American fast-pitch softball stands as a cherished tradition deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of Missouri; and,

 

WHEREAS, in the face of discrimination, many Hispanic, Latino, and African American individuals were unjustly excluded from participating in all-white baseball teams; and,

 

WHEREAS, it was the spirit of resilience that brought families, neighbors, and friends together to form fast-pitch softball teams, a testament to the strength of community bonds; and,

 

WHEREAS, the steadfast spirit of the following teams has made monumental contributions to the Hispanic and Latino Community across Missouri:

                     Los Amigos managed by Ralph Villegas and Paul Waxie Hernandez

                     KC Pirates managed by Greg Perez Sr.

                     St. John Pevine managed by Anthony Villegas Sr.

                     KC Locos managed by Joe Segura and Tony Talavera

                     KC Angels managed by Cris Medina

                     KC Aztecas managed by Johnny Campos, Jesse Salas, and Daniel Salas

                     KC Indios managed by Andy Garcia and Dan Garcia

                     KC Reds managed by Eddie Diaz

                     Argentine Eagles fast-pitch established in 1948 managed by A.J. Villegas

                     The Bravos established in the mid-60s by, Joe “Big Rabbit”, Gilbert Aguirre, and Vinnie and Bubba Hernandez; and,

 

WHEREAS, the following individuals are recognized and listed in the Paul “Waxie” Hernandez Mexican American Softball Association Hall of fame:

WHEREAS, through the collective efforts of community members and the aforementioned teams, Mexican American fast-pitch softball has transcended state lines, uniting individuals, and leaving an enduring, positive impact on the Hispanic and Latino community not only within Missouri but throughout the entire nation; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri that the Legislature hereby recognizes and celebrates the immeasurable contributions of Mexican American Softball Leagues to the cultural heritage and vitality of our great state.

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
