Body
WHEREAS, Caleb Brown, 10-year-old son of Jeffrey Brown and fifth grade student at Richardson Elementary School in Lee's Summit, recently competed in the Junior National Chess Championship in Tucson, Arizona, where he earned a first place finish in the kindergarten through eighth grade division; and,
WHEREAS, in less than a year's time, Caleb has advanced his United States Chess Federation ranking from 550 to just under 1300, which enables him to compete at a higher, more challenging level in future tournaments; and,
WHEREAS, Caleb, who began playing chess in 2003 with 5th grade elementary school teacher Cris Carpenter, is the founding member of the Richardson Chess Club, and is currently coached by Ken Fee; and,
WHEREAS, Caleb holds two state and one national chess titles, is the Missouri 5th grade Scholastic champion, Elementary (K-6) Scholastic champion, and Junior High Scholastic co-champion for the under 1000 section, and is a member of the Missouri Chess Association; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to his extraordinary accomplishments as a chess player, Caleb is a blue belt in martial arts, plays the piano, and has been nominated for the Aspire/AIM program for gifted children for the 2004-2005 school year; and,
WHEREAS, Caleb's future goals include achieving a "chess expert" level with the United States Chess Federation during his second year of chess playing, attending the Anatoly Karpov International School of Chess, and ultimately earning a chess scholarship to attend the University of Texas-Dallas; therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates Caleb Brown on his extraordinary accomplishments and extends sincere best wishes for continued success in his endeavors now and in the future.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
