Body
WHEREAS, Cesar E. Chavez founded the United Farm Workers of America (UFW) in 1962 as a way to protect and serve farm workers whose poverty and disenfranchisement he had shared; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez led the UFW for more than three decades, working for dignity, respect, fair wages, medical coverage, pension benefits, and humane living conditions, as well as countless other rights for hundreds of thousands of farm workers; and,
WHEREAS, in 1991, Mr. Chavez received the Aguila Azeteca (The Aztec Eagle), Mexico's highest award presented to persons of Mexican heritage who have made major contributions outside of Mexico; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, and the award was presented posthumously by President Bill Clinton; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez passed away on April 23, 1993, while still serving as president of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO; and,
WHEREAS, every year, the Kansas City Cesar E. Chavez Committee honors the legacy of Cesar E. Chavez by holding various events highlighting the contributions he made as a civic leader during his lifetime; and,
WHEREAS, this year's celebration is scheduled for April 19, 2008, and will consist of a symbolic march at the Guadalupe Center, which is located in one of Kansas City's oldest Hispanic communities; and,
WHEREAS, in honor of the Cesar E. Chavez Day of Unity, the University of Central Missouri has donated two scholarships for Missouri students who embrace the Cesar E. Chavez sense of leadership and community; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby recognizes the Cesar E. Chavez Day of Unity Celebration on April 19, 2008, commemorating the 15th Anniversary of Cesar E. Chavez's death.
Enacted and Approved
Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
