Title

A RESOLUTION urging Health Midwest to say "No" to the purchase of local hospitals by Tenet Healthcare Corporation.

Intro

RESOLUTION # 14341,   October 14, 2002

INTRODUCED BY                      Bill Petrie, County Legislator

Body

WHEREAS, as leaders in this community, the members of the Legislature are committed to preserving affordable, quality healthcare; and,

WHEREAS, Tenet Healthcare buys hospitals and then closes or sells many of those it purchases; and,

WHEREAS, Tenet spends less on staffing and patient care, admitting that it expects nurses to do more with less, which often results in less direct patient care hours; and,

WHEREAS, Tenet diverts precious healthcare dollars to the pockets of its CEO Jeffrey Barbakow, who last year took in more than $116 million from his employment with Tenet; and,

WHEREAS, while Tenet is one of the largest and most profitable hospital corporations in the nation, its business practices are driving up prices and driving down the quality of patient care; and,

WHEREAS, the Legislature believes that affordable, quality healthcare will be at risk if Tenet is allowed to purchase the thirteen hospitals currently owned by Health Midwest; and,

WHEREAS, Tenet Healthcare Corporation is the wrong choice for Jackson County; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby urges Health Midwest to do what is best for the community and say "No" to Tenet Healthcare Corporation.
