Body

 WHEREAS, Creative City Kansas City, Inc. is a nonprofit organization created to secure membership within the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Creative Cities Network (UCCN) for Kansas City; and,

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City, Missouri successfully joined the UCCN in 2017; and,

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City is the only UNESCO designated Creative City of Music in the United States; and,

 

WHEREAS, Anita Dixon-Brown, Creative City Kansas City Inc. Executive Director and local historian, and Dr. Jacob Wagner, Associate Professor of Urban Planning + Design, worked to connect preservation efforts at the 18th & Vine district with the UNESCO platform; and,

 

WHEREAS, UNESCO has provided apprenticeship programs under the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) for the first time in American history with the American Music Apprenticeship Program (AMAP); and,

 

WHEREAS, the AMAP is the first DOL recognized youth music apprenticeship program to focus on American Indigenous music over the course of 4 years; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Swing Era and historic Jazz music culture is forever preserved in the 18th & Vine District; and,

 

WHEREAS, studies have shown that music therapy and cultural arts education can improve mental health as well as improve skills within core subjects of education; and,

 

WHEREAS, the global creative industries generate 29.5 million jobs that employ 1% of the world’s population creating more jobs than the automotive industry in the U.S., Europe, and Japan combined; and,

 

WHEREAS, the global creative industries market grew from $441.02 billion in 2022 to $579.52 billion, during which the United States remained in the top of those markets, reaching $30.2 billion; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri that the Legislature hereby supports the growth of UNESCO Creative City of Music in Kansas City, Missouri and the focal point, Creative City KC, Inc. as it recognizes the financial impact these programs could bring to our city as a global economic development strategy.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
