WHEREAS, The Jackson County Advocate, a community weekly newspaper, was founded as The Grandview Advocate on January 14, 1953, by James Turnbaugh, Jr.; and,

 

WHEREAS, The Jackson County Advocate began as a local newspaper for the City of Grandview and the unincorporated regions of Southern Jackson County; and,

 

WHEREAS, the founding publisher's wife, Agnes Turnbaugh, became co-owner and co-publisher in September 1953, and their daughter Annette Turnbaugh and son Joseph Turnbaugh both served as members of the newspaper staff; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Missouri Press Association named The Jackson County Advocate a Blue Ribbon weekly newspaper; and,

 

WHEREAS, upon James Turnbaugh's passing in 2003, Agnes Turnbaugh, took over full ownership and continued to publish the newspaper; and,

 

WHEREAS, Agnes announced her decision to cease publishing The Jackson County Advocate on August 29, 2005 and  published the last edition on Thursday, September 15, 2005; and,

 

WHEREAS, the service provided by The Jackson County Advocate through the dedication and graciousness of the Turnbaugh family to the citizens of Jackson County will be greatly missed; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature commends Agnes Turnbaugh for her dedication and distinguished service to the citizens of Jackson County, Missouri through the publication of The Jackson County Advocate for the past fifty (50) years, and wishes her success and happiness in her future endeavors.

 

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
