IN THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE OF JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI Title A RESOLUTION proclaiming February 1998 as African American History Month and recognizing the efforts of Black Archives of Mid-America, Inc., in promoting events for this celebration. Intro RESOLUTION # 12049, February 23, 1998 INTRODUCED BY Carl W. Bussey, County Legislator Body WHEREAS, the month of February has traditionally been set aside as African American History Month, with various events and activities taking place throughout the community; and, WHEREAS, Black Archives of Mid-America, Inc. was founded in 1974 by Horace M. Peterson III for the purpose of collecting, preserving, and presenting to the general public and institutions of learning, documents, artifacts, and stories relating the African American experience in the Kansas City and Midwest area; and, WHEREAS, Black Archives joins others in the celebration of African American History Month by featuring exhibition photographs by Matthew "Elijah" Washington and William Fambrough depicting life in the Kansas City community; and, WHEREAS, the theme for African American History Month is "African Americans in Business, The Path Toward Empowerment;" and, WHEREAS, Matthew "Elijah" Washington and William Fambrough successfully dedicated themselves to the spirit of entrepreneurship, and uplifted the African American community through the arts; and, WHEREAS, the Black Archives of Mid-America, Inc., is in its 24th year, now under the leadership of Thabit Murarah, Executive Director; and, WHEREAS, the Matthew "Elijah" Washington and William Fambrough photographs will be exhibited at Black Archives through the month of May; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby declares February 1998 as African American History Month, and recognizes the efforts of Black Archives of Mid-America, Inc., in promoting events for this celebration. Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
