Intro
RESOLUTION #17030, October 12, 2009
INTRODUCED BY Theresa Garza Ruiz, County Legislator

Body
WHEREAS, on Sunday, October 18, 2009, the Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri will dedicate two historic markers for the Battle of the Little Blue; and,

WHEREAS, the Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri was founded in December 1992, by Harold "Sonny" Wells, and in May of 1993 was incorporated as a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion and better understanding of all aspects of the Civil War, specifically concerning western Missouri and eastern Kansas and the "Border War" conflict; and,

WHEREAS, as part of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, beginning in 2011, the Round Table has erected two low-profile markers to describe the Battle of the Little Blue; and,

WHEREAS, the Battle of the Little Blue occurred on October 21st and 22nd, 1864, as some 15,000 Union and Confederate forces fought along the banks of the Little Blue River in eastern Jackson County; and,

WHEREAS, it was hoped by the Confederacy that this push by General Sterling Price into Missouri would take pressure off the Eastern Front, but by the virtue of the failure of Price's Great Missouri Raid, it assisted in bringing closure to the Civil War by 1865; and,

WHEREAS, this two-day battle slowed the advance of the Confederates and served as a prelude to the Second Battle of Independence, Byram's Ford (Big Blue), and the Battle of Westport, which was the largest Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River; and,

WHEREAS, the Battle of the Little Blue is among the National Park Service's top 384 battle sites in the country, in the top 15 at-risk battle sites in the United States, and is in the top 10 endangered battle sites in Missouri; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature recognizes the dedication of the Battle of the Little Blue historic markers, and all the work the Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri to promote and create a better understanding of all aspects of the Civil War.
