Body
WHEREAS, the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) and MetLife recently named Stan Elliott Principal of the Year, from among more than 500 high school principals in Missouri; and,
WHEREAS, according to a press release from MASSP, Mr. Elliot was chosen because of the "impact he makes on students and staff;" and,
WHEREAS, a student testimonial provided by MASSP focused on Mr. Elliott's dedication to improving Lee's Summit North and his interest in the students: "He listens to the students and teachers equally, while giving them his undivided attention;" and,
WHEREAS, last spring Mr. Elliott was named Principal of the Year by the Greater Kansas City Missouri Principals' Association; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Elliott was named North's first principal in 1994, encountering the special responsibilities of dealing with construction issues, opening the new school, and transferring or hiring new teachers; and,
WHEREAS, he and his staff were responsible for getting the new building ready for the 1,030 students who attended North that first year, and managing growth has remained a part of his job; and,
WHEREAS, under Mr. Elliott's leadership, Lee's Summit North has expanded its at-risk program, developed a senior mentoring program, and started an "academic alert" form to let counselors know if a student is struggling; and,
WHEREAS, he has overseen the creation of the Stop Anger From Endangering Today's Youth counseling program and was also involved in the district's International Baccalaureate program, which gives high school students a chance to enroll in freshman and sophomore college courses during their last years of high school; and,
WHEREAS, prior to beginning his career in education he earned a bachelor's degree (1976), a master's degree (1978), and a Bachelor of Science in Education (1982) from Northeast Missouri State University, and an Education Specialist degree (1982) from the University of Missouri Kansas City; and,
WHEREAS, Stan Elliott has never regretted his decision to pursue a career in education, and said "There's not a thing I would do differently;" and,
WHEREAS, he has noted that he could not have done it without the support of the community, his staff, and his family; and,
WHEREAS, his wife, Barb, taught kindergarten in Lee's Summit schools for many years, the couple's son Steven is a sophomore at North and their daughter Parker is a seventh grader at Campbell Junior High; and,
WHEREAS, for Mr. Elliott, the best part of being Lee's Summit North's principal is the challenge of building a curriculum that keeps students doing well on state standardized tests, yet offers classes that hold students' interest and teach them what they need to know for the future; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Lee's Summit North High School principal Stan Elliott upon being named Principal of the Year by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals and MetLife.
