Body
WHEREAS, the National Ataxia Foundation (NAF) has a mission to accelerate the
development of treatments and a cure while working to improve the lives of those living with Ataxia; and,
WHEREAS, the NAF is promoting September 25th as International Ataxia Awareness Day through a coordinated effort to help shed light on and fight to end this rare disease; and,
WHEREAS, Ataxia is a neurological disease that gets worse over time; it affects all ages; and,
WHEREAS, Ataxia symptoms are related to degeneration of the cerebellum, the part of the brain that is responsible for coordinating movement, which can cause slurred speech, stumbling, falling, and incoordination; and,
WHEREAS, complications from the disease are serious, oftentimes debilitating, and life-shortening; and,
WHEREAS, sufferers of Ataxia often face isolation barriers, in large part because the disease is rare and unknown to most; and,
WHEREAS, NAF’s goals are to raise awareness, support Ataxia research, and advocate for those impacted by the disease; and,
WHEREAS, recognizing September 25th as International Ataxia Awareness Day supports advocacy efforts needed to improve the lives of the persons and families affected by Ataxia; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED that the Jackson County Legislature, and the people of Jackson County recognize Ataxia Awareness Day on September 25th in order to increase awareness and support for those living with Ataxia.

Effective Date: This resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
