RESOLUTION NO. 21478, November 27, 2023

 

INTRODUCED BY  Manuel Abarca IV, Jalen Anderson, Donna Peyton, Venessa Huskey, Jeanie Lauer, and Sean E. Smith, County Legislators

 

 

Body

 WHEREAS, November is recognized as National Native American Heritage Month and provides an opportunity for all Americans to honor and celebrate the contributions of Native Americans to our nation's history, culture, and progress; and,

 

WHEREAS, during this month, citizens are encouraged to reflect on the resilience, strength, and enduring traditions of Indigenous peoples, both past and present; and,

 

WHEREAS, there are over 560 federally recognized Native American tribes in the United States with thousands of Native Americans residing in Jackson County; and,

 

WHEREAS, Native Americans have endured historical injustices, broken treaties, and policies of assimilation that have impacted their heritage; and, 

 

WHEREAS, the United States must uphold its solemn trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations, recognizing and respecting Tribal sovereignty and self-determination, while promoting justice, equality, and understanding; and,

 

 

WHEREAS, the Legislature recognizes and commends the significant contributions of Native Americans to various fields, including education, science, healthcare, arts, business, and public service; and,

 

WHEREAS, Jackson County is committed to ensuring that Native Americans have equal opportunities to succeed, and the County supports initiatives that create jobs, improve infrastructure, and enhance the well-being of Tribal communities; and,

 

WHEREAS, the County Legislature acknowledges the importance of healing from intergenerational trauma, supporting language revitalization, protecting voting rights, and addressing the crisis of missing or murdered Indigenous people; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri that the Legislature hereby proclaims November as National Native American Heritage Month in Jackson County and encourages all residents to celebrate and honor the accomplishments and rich ancestry and traditions of the Native American community.

 

 

 

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
