INTRODUCED BY Bob Spence, County Legislator

Body

WHEREAS, the Majors-Russell & Waddell Ranch (M.R.W.), contributed significantly to  routes of travel between Old Westport and Sante Fe, New Mexico, operating as a freight transportation facility in the mid-1800's during a time when Kansas City was known as the southwestern freighting capital of the United States; and,

WHEREAS, the M.R.W. Company chose the site of the M.R.W. Ranch, located between US 50 Highway and Buckner-Tarsney Road, due to a large supply of spring water on established routes of travel; and,

WHEREAS, the location of the ranch appears to be close to the intersection of two early Indian trails known as the Shawnee Trace and Harmony Mission Road; and,

WHEREAS, the ranch included a complex of warehouses reported by old-timers to be used to store merchandise during shipments from Lexington to Sante Fe; and,

WHEREAS, stables on the ranch were used to house teams of mules and oxen during the winter; and,

WHEREAS, the ranch also provided equipment repair shops for travelers along the Sante Fe Trail; and,

WHEREAS, on November 18, 1887, the M.R.W. Ranch was deeded to W.A.  and James Washington  Noel, a confederate soldier who participated in the Battle of Lone Jack; and,

WHEREAS, the property has remained in the Noel family to the present date and is currently owned by a grandson; and,
