Intro
RESOLUTION #11313, June 3, 1996
INTRODUCED BY John Patrick Burnett, County Legislator
Body
WHEREAS, pursuant to § 137.082, RSMo 1994, and § 2063., Jackson County Code, 1984, the county now assesses new residential real property as of the date of its occupancy, instead of as of January 1 of the next succeeding year; and,
WHEREAS, § 137.082 also requires the county to remove from the tax rolls during the tax year, upon application of the property owner, any residential real property improvements destroyed by a natural disaster, such as a tornado, fire, flood, or earthquake, if the property is rendered unoccupied and uninhabitable due to the destruction; and,
WHEREAS, on the night of May 26, 1996, a severe storm or "microburst," which produced winds travelling at speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour, destroyed 20 houses and damaged some 60 others, mostly in the Raintree Lake subdivision in Lee's Summit; and,
WHEREAS, by May 28, 1996, representatives of the Assessment Department had visited the scene of the damage and identified the 20 houses which were rendered unoccupied and uninhabitable by the storm; and,
WHEREAS, the Department is now taking all steps necessary to remove those properties from the tax rolls for the remainder of 1996 without requiring formal applications from the already- burdened property owners; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature commends the Assessment Department for its quick action in providing tax assistance to the victims of the Lee's Summit windstorm; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature encourages the Department to take similar quick action in the event of future natural disasters.
