A RESOLUTION congratulating Mariah Fuimaono upon being named among The Kansas City Star's Scholar-Athletes of the Year for 2002.

RESOLUTION # 14233,   June 24, 2002

Body

WHEREAS, Mariah Fuimaono of Oak Grove High School was named by The Kansas City Star as her school's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2002; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mariah ranks eighteenth in her class of 124, with a 3.73 grade point average on a 4.0 scale; and,

 

WHEREAS, she earned varsity letters in track (4 years), volleyball (3 years), basketball (4 years) and softball (4 years); and,

 

WHEREAS, she was all conference in volleyball (1999, 2000, 2001), all-conference in softball (2000, 2001), all-conference in basketball (2000,2001), and currently holds the school record in the shot put at 41'9"; and,

 

WHEREAS, she was nominated for KMZU radio station Dream Team Award in basketball, voted most valuable volleyball player (2001) and voted most un-selfish basketball player (2001, 2002); and,

 

WHEREAS, Mariah is a member of the National Honor Society (2000-2002), the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (1998-2002) and the American Field Service; and,

 

WHEREAS, she is involved in many community service activities with her church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,  including cleaning up city parks in Oak Grove and Odessa, volunteering with the Jump for Heart program, working with league volleyball and basketball camps, ringing bells for the Salvation Army and conducting food drives; and,

 

WHEREAS, she was captain of the volleyball and basketball team (2001,2002), participated in band all four years of high school and choir for the past two years; and,

 

WHEREAS, she will attend Neosho County Community College this fall, on a volleyball scholarship; and,

 

WHEREAS, "Mariah is an exceptional young lady that excelled in both the classroom and the playing field.  She is well respected by the faculty and her peers," said Mr. Leland Loux, a Counselor at Oak Grove High School; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mariah is the daughter of Filipo and Carolyn Fuimaono of Oak Grove; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates Mariah Fuimaono upon being named among The Kansas City Star's Scholar-Athletes of the Year for 2002.

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
