A RESOLUTION welcoming the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic, The Honorable H. E. Martin Butora, PhD, upon his visit to Jackson County for the official opening of the Slovak Consulate in Kansas City.

INTRODUCED BY Victor E. Callahan, County Legislator

 

 

Body

WHEREAS, in September 2000, with approval by the United States Department of State,  Eduard Kukan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic, appointed Ross P. Marine, DHL, MHA, Honorary Consulate of the Slovak Republic to the states of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska to establish a Consulate of the Slovak Republic in Kansas City, Missouri; and,

 

 

WHEREAS, the Honorable H.E. Martin Butora, PhD, and his wife, Zora Butorova, PhD,  will visit Jackson County from October 16-19, 2001, for the official opening of the Consulate of the Slovak Republic in Kansas City; and,

 

WHEREAS, Ambassador Butora  was a co-founder of "Public Against Violence," the leading Slovak movement in the Velvet Revolution; and,

 

WHEREAS, this movement resulted in the fall of the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia in November 1989, and contributed to Slovakia becoming a free and independent Republic in 1993; and,

 

WHEREAS, a number of activities and events are planned for the visit including a luncheon in honor of Ambassador Butora's visit to be held at the Harrry S. Truman Presidential Library & Archives on Tuesday, October 16, 2001, in the "Independence Room;" and,

 

WHEREAS, other events include a wreath laying at the Truman grave site, a meeting with the Czech & Slovak Club of Greater Kansas City, an interview with Walt Bodine, KCUR Radio, and address at the Downtown Rotary Club 13; and,

 

WHEREAS, the visit will culminate with an invitation-only reception the evening of October 18th at the Rockhill Tennis Club, honoring the Ambassador and his wife for officially  opening the Slovak Republic Consulate in Kansas City; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature welcomes the Honorable H.E. Martin Butora, PhD., Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic to the United States.

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
