IN THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE OF JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI Title A RESOLUTION expressing the sympathy of the Legislature to the family and friends of Mary Gamez Lona upon the occasion of her untimely death. Intro RESOLUTION # 12943, November 15, 1999 INTRODUCED BY Scott Burnett, County Legislator Body WHEREAS, the members of the Legislature have been deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mary Gamez Lona; and, WHEREAS, born in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico, Mary came to the United States at a young age, and grew up in Kansas City; and, WHEREAS, she later received a bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of Kansas; and, WHEREAS, Mary held several challenging positions throughout her career, including working to prevent teenage pregnancy at the Guadalupe Center, working with the Parents as Teachers program through the Kansas City School District, and acting as executive director of the Richard Cabot Clinic; and, WHEREAS, for the past five years, Mary published La List Latina, the Hispanic business directory, that is printed in Spanish and English; and, WHEREAS, during 1999, Mary served on Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes' transition team, advising the mayor on appointments; and, WHEREAS, Mary is survived by her husband, William, ("Memo"), a member of the County's Housing Resources Commission, and three children, Guillermo, Gabriel, and David; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the members of the Legislature pause in their deliberations to salute a distinguished Jackson County civic leader, Mary Gamez Lona, and express their appreciation for her outstanding and unselfish career on behalf of the citizens of Jackson County. Attorney Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
