Body
WHEREAS, Judge William W. Ely was born in Kansas City, MO, and graduated from Raytown High School in 1958; and,
WHEREAS, Judge Ely attended Graceland College, Central Missouri State University, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, from which he earned a J.D. degree in 1966; and,
WHEREAS, Judge Ely also served in the Missouri Army National Guard with the 42d Army Band; and,
WHEREAS, Judge Ely practiced law in Independence and Blue Springs for seventeen years and served as city attorney for Blue Springs from 1970-1983; and,
WHEREAS, Judge Ely has also played French horn in the Blue Springs, Raytown and Independence Community Bands and the Jubilee Brass sextet, managed and coached little league baseball in Blue Springs, and been active in the R.L.D.S. church; and,
WHEREAS, in 1983, Judge Ely was appointed judge of Division 2 of the Circuit Court of Jackson County, sitting in Independence, by Governor Christopher S. Bond; and,
WHEREAS, Judge Ely has capably served the court for the last seventeen years, handling literally thousands of cases; and,
WHEREAS, Judge Ely believes that the most evident change during his tenure on the bench has been the increase in the court's criminal caseload, from 500 in 1987 to nearly 2,000 now; and,
WHEREAS, Judge Ely will retire from the bench October 9, 2000; and,
WHEREAS, Judge Ely and his wife, Becky, will relocate to Arizona, where he plans to work on his golf and tennis games, keep up his instrument pilot skills, and enjoy his four children and four grandchildren; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby honors and congratulates Judge William W. Ely upon the occasion of his retirement from the bench of the Circuit Court of Jackson County, and extends to him every good wish for an enjoyable, fruitful, and prosperous retirement.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
