Body

WHEREAS, Commissioner Mildred L. Watson passed away on Friday, July 1, 2005; and,

WHEREAS, Commissioner Watson provided the Juvenile Division of the Jackson County Family Court with eight (8) years of devoted service; and,

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner Watson was the first woman commissioner in the Juvenile Division of the 16th Circuit Court; and,

                                          

WHEREAS, although Commissioner Watson retired in 1992, she remained active at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, working to bring the Henry Ossawa Tanner exhibit to the museum; and,

 

WHEREAS, Commissioner Watson received the Kansas City Star's Difference Maker Award in 1993, was inducted into the Mid-America Hall of Fame at Kansas City, KS Community College and was honored with the Mildred L. Watson Reading Laboratory at the McCune Facility in Independence in appreciation for her work with at-risk youth; and,                                          

 

WHEREAS, in spite of many obstacles, including gender and racial discrimination, Commissioner Watson overcame and accomplished great things during the course of her life; and,

 

WHEREAS, the deep compassion of Commissioner Watson will be remembered by her many co-workers, friends, family members, and youth; and her service to the Juvenile Division of the Jackson County Family Court will never be forgotten; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature honors Commissioner Mildred L. Watson for her distinguished career of eight years with the Juvenile Division of the Jackson County Family Court and for her dedication and compassion to the youth with whom she worked.

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
