Body
WHEREAS, Susanne Mitko, a seventh-grade Eastern Hemisphere Social Studies teacher at Bernard Campbell Middle School, has been named the Missouri Teacher of the Year for 2009; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitko was one of six nominees chosen from forty-three school districts across Missouri; and,
WHEREAS, the Lee's Summit R-7 School District Superintendent, David McGehee, planned an assembly to surprise Mrs. Mitko's students with the news that she was named the Missouri Teacher of the Year; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitko spoke to her students about the importance of finding a job in life that makes them as happy as teaching makes her; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitko was also named Rotary Teacher of the Year in 2009, received the Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009, Missouri Scholars Academy's Teacher Recognition in 2008, was elected to the School Leadership Team and selected for Cultural Exchange with Chinese Sister School in 2007, was placed on the National Honor Roll of Outstanding American Teachers and received Missouri Fine Academy's Arts Teacher Recognition in 2005, and has been named Teacher of the Month and Honoree in Who's Who America's Teachers in multiple years; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. McGehee said, "Mrs. Mitko is a shining example of some of the great teachers we have in this district"; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitko will now go on to compete for the National Teacher of the Year award, something her students are sure she will win; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature congratulates Mrs. Susanne Mitko upon being named the Missouri Teacher of the Year, and wishes her well in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

Effective Date: This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
