A RESOLUTION congratulating Blue Springs South High School Science Teacher Deanna Lankford upon being selected to receive a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

RESOLUTION 13633, March 26, 2001

Body

WHEREAS, based on her extraordinary accomplishments and exemplary work with  students, Blue Springs South High School Science Teacher Deanna Lankford received a Presidential Award during National Science Foundation activities in Washington, D.C., from March 6 through 10, 2001; and,

 

WHEREAS, this award is given to public and private secondary and elementary school teachers who have demonstrated excellence in science and math; and,

 

WHEREAS, in every state one high school and one elementary school teacher each receives an award for science and one high school and one elementary school teacher each receives an award for math; and,

 

WHEREAS, Deanna was the only high school teacher in the State of Missouri to win the science award; and,

 

WHEREAS, in addition to receiving the award, Deanna and the other honorees received a $7,500.00 grant from the National Science Foundation, attended activities and seminars, and had an opportunity to talk with other professionals in their fields; and,

 

WHEREAS, Deanna, a National Board Certified teacher of advanced science classes, has taught  at Blue Springs South High School since the school opened in 1992, and in the Blue Springs District since 1983; and,

 

WHEREAS, Deanna keeps the interest of her students by using hands-on experiments and bringing in experts to enhance the classroom; and,

 

WHEREAS, some of her class projects have included testing genetically-altered corn, testing DNA samples, and monitoring zebra fish; and,

 

WHEREAS, many of her students have said they enjoy her classes because they are never boring; and,

 

WHEREAS, Deanna is honored to have been selected for the award and has noted that one of the contributing factors to her receiving the award is that she teaches with an outstanding faculty at Blue Springs South High School, of whom she has stated "I think there are any number of them who could win this award;" and,

 

WHEREAS, Blue Springs South principal Keith Maxey has said "Deanna is a wonderful teacher.  She has such a willingness to teach kids.  I just try to stay out of her way;" now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the County Legislature of Jackson County, Missouri, that the Legislature hereby congratulates Deanna Lankford upon being selected to receive a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

 

Enacted and Approved

Effective Date:  This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon its passage by a majority of the Legislature.
